It happened again.
Nightmares of turbulence, swarms of distrust, and thoughts in disarray. The previous night left marks on her face- battle scars. But alas, at precisely 7:30 in the morning, Virginia swiped off her alarm and mentally prepared herself for the day. As she sat on the edge of her bed, she looked around her room and felt a rush of peace- chaos did not reside in this realm. Everything was as it should be and in its proper place. Phew.
She strutted over to the bathroom and looked in the mirror for several moments, skimming through the events of the day she scrawled on its surface the night before. Today she was to take her group of kids on a field trip to the mountains. She envisioned every possible event and how the day should go precisely, that is, if everyone were to heed her instructions. She would surprise everyone with glitter pens, show them the trail that led to the most beautiful wildflowers and together they’d build a massive bouquet, and if someone scraped their knee...
...she’d be well prepared.
But what if the bus broke down on the way to the mountains? What if Katy picked a fight with Miranda, as always? Or Alicia talked down to one of the younger girls, since she thought she was better than everyone? Or was it that she was just insecure and needed more praise? What if things didn’t go the way she planned? The words on her mirror covered her face and scribbled out her features.
She hopped in the shower and made notes of what she would do in case things went awry. No matter how much she counteracted the unpredicted issues, no matter how many times she washed the suds off her body, there was the inevitability that things could, indeed, happen like Picnic at Hanging Rock. She stepped out of the shower and finished getting ready.
With each article of clothing she dressed herself with, she became more acquainted with the idea that there was also the possibility that today could actually go better than expected. Maybe the unpredictability could lead to the most perfect, wonderful day she never could have imagined?
Virginia looked at the clock and saw that she had plenty of time to enjoy the rest of the morning. She sat on the floor and leaned against her bed, taking a fat hit off her pipe.
Everything slowed down and her thoughts simmered.
No matter how much she battled the inevitable in her head, she knew that she would be prepared for whatever happened. She was a troop leader, after all. So, yeah, she might react differently than she means to, for she is human, and can’t avoid that. It felt reassuring to finally accept the fact that nobody’s perfect, not even her.
She smiled, doused her eyes with some eye drops, added the finishing touches to her wardrobe, and walked out the door fully prepared for whatever events the day might have to offer.
